Just between you and me….
I had a call with my ACCOUNTANT the other day, one of three every year. He’s smart and driven and we talk about the economy and growth and building our business. This time, we were both a bit more CAUTIOUS in reflections and projections for the rest of the year.
At one point I shared what it's like going from flying all around the world to working entirely from home. How it has been challenging and creative, and how appreciative I am for my clients. I casually mentioned I'd even added a few NEW clients during the downturn, which has helped me maintain my numbers and generate moderate growth.
"Um," he said looking at the numbers with slight hesitation. "I don't mean to sound patronizing or anything but — I have to say —
I'm proud of you!"
THANK GOODNESS we weren’t on a video. I wasn’t expecting that. And:
I started to cry.
To be recognized in good times is great. To get a pat on the back in tough times is magic. Nice words come easy between family and friends and mentors and clients. But when the pressure is on, kind words are often the first to go. Maybe you’ve noticed that on tv, online or in stores lately?
Three good words is all it takes to make someone’s day. A gift for them and a reminder for us: Of the endless power we share when we RECOGNIZE OTHERS as neighbors. To turn and look and wave. Thankful for their efforts - at work, staying strong, remaining calm. Not a stranger hiding online or blocking our way in aisle at Costco. Someone doing their best, trying with all they have. Just as troubled walking six-foot-estranged, but smiling with all their might, right through their mask.
That’s what it means to see the neighbor in all of us. And turn the moment into a gift with a hearty nod of:
“Well done!”
Let’s make kudos more common than criticisms offline and online.
Let’s make appreciation more likable than sarcasm in the comments or under our breath.
Let’s make praise more profitable than parsimony in the news. Or advertising. Or politics.
YOU name the time and place!
Halfway through the year, there are many things we still need - a vaccine, a recovery, a vacation indeed. When things don’t go as planned, the answer falls to US. To plant some good will and watch it grow. Like farmers of an unlimited silo of good deeds every day:
Between You, me, and
Everyone in between -
Well done so far!
For making someone feel neigh.
